Joint Action Days as Part of Celebrations of International Environmental Dates with NEIC Member Countries
On 5–12 June 2026, the Ecosystem movement held the ‘Green Deeds Marathon’, a national initiative timed to coincide with Ecologist’s Day and World Environment Day that brought together environmental activists, volunteers, representatives of public organizations and educational institutions, and citizens from across the country to participate in environmental, educational, and volunteer activities.
As part of the initiative, all 89 regions of the Russian Federation, as well as Kazakhstan, hosted community cleanup events, tree-planting campaigns, environmental festivals, workshops, excursions, and educational programmes. There was a special emphasis on activities linked to such national environmental campaigns as ‘BoomBattle’, ‘Water of Russia’, ‘Garden of Remembrance’, and ‘I Choose Clean Air’, as well as the #EcoGTO environmental relay organized in partnership with the Movement of the First.
Key themes of the initiative included environmental volunteering, the fostering of an ecological culture, the circular economy, recycling, waste sorting, and the engagement of citizens in environmental protection activities.
On 5–6 June, volunteers from Russia and Kazakhstan worked together to clean up the banks of several transboundary rivers: the Irtysh, Ishim, Ural, and Tobol. The initiative was held as part of the UN International Year of Volunteers under the auspices of the DOBRO International Association.
A total of 4,600 events involving 177,035 participants were organized as part of this initiative. Information about these events was made available on a unified portal for environmental initiatives (экологироссии.рф), where participants could register, receive a certificate of participation, earn verified volunteer hours, and collect ‘eco-points’.
The initiative brought together environmental initiatives from across all regions of Russia, led to broad public engagement in environmental protection efforts, and helped promote environmental volunteering. It served as a form of public support for the Environmental Well-Being National Project and the #GreenShift (#ЗеленаяСмена) programme.
