History of Nevsky International Ecological Congress

Historically, Nevsky International Ecological Congress is deeply rooted in the work of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member Nations which, along with the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, is one of its permanent Organizers. The Congress is an annual event dating back to 2008. It has become a forum for government authorities, businesses, universities, research institutions, and public bodies to discuss ways for improving environmental efficiency of the CIS economies.

The 1st Nevsky International Ecological Congress took place on 9 December 2008 and focused on the issues related to preserving water resources.

On 15 May 2009, building on the outcomes of the I Congress, the IPA CIS and the Federation Council together with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and supported by the Russian Government held the 2nd Nevsky International Ecological Congress. The Congress featured a dedicated web-site – http://ecocongress.info. The Congress discussed the enhancement of cross-border cooperation in the use of energy resources, conservancy and sharing best practices between the CIS and the CE in legal and practical dimensions of environmental effort.

The 3rd Nevsky International Ecological Congress was held on 14 May 2010. The Congress dwelled on greening up natural resource management as a way of building a new economy in balance with nature.

The 4rd Nevsky International Ecological Congress dedicated to innovative pathways of building interfaces between the human society and nature was held on 17 May 2011 with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as an official partner.

The 5th Nevsky International Ecological Congress was held on 17-18 May 2012 with a cross-cutting theme Environmental framework of sustainable development.

The 6th Nevsky International Ecological Congress, attended by over 2000 participants from 28 countries, was held on 21-22 May 2013. A unique Eco-Theater demonstrating films and documentaries on the environmental issues was arranged in the Tavricheskiy garden, and a photo expo dedicated to the International Day of Bio-Diversity was held on 22-31 May 2013.

The 7th Nevsky International Ecological Congress was held on 28-29 May 2015 with a cross-cutting theme Environmental Safety Strategies: Implementation Tools.
