The business programme architecture of the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress has been published on the official website of the event. The Congress is one of the world’s most important ecological events and will be taking place on 22–23 May 2025 at St. Petersburg’s Tavrichesky Palace.
More than 1,200 participants, including the heads of legislative and executive authorities and representatives of Russian and international environmental organizations, the business community, educational and research institutions, the media, and public associations are expected at the event.
The business programme consists of a plenary session, thematic sessions, an exhibition of environmental projects of federal and regional importance, and environmental activities united by the main idea of the Congress, reflected in this year’s slogan: ‘Planet Earth: Living in Harmony with Nature’.
“It is impossible to ensure quality of life and longevity without a comprehensive environmental protection system, support for environmental programmes, and the continued development of energy-saving technologies. The future that awaits our children and grandchildren is decided today. Our government believes in the importance of the environmental agenda. The tasks we are presented with require a joint effort by the state and society and a responsible attitude towards the world around us,” Adviser to the Russian President Anton Kobyakov said.
Business programme thematic areas include tracks dedicated to food security in a changing climate, subsoil usage and the environment, low-carbon solutions for developing a green economy, the development of ecotourism, and the role of women in achieving environmental well-being, among others.
One of the most important Congress tracks will tackle the development of the circular economy and will include discussions on state policy for the development of a circular economy in Russia, the ‘Ecological Wellbeing’ national project as a new stage in the development of the solid waste industry, legislative regulation of the industry, new infrastructure, and state support for green projects. Finally, the international discussion platform ‘The Ecology of Large Cities’ will draw examples from real cities as it hosts a discussion of the outlook for well-being.
Domestic and foreign companies will share their experience with biotechnologies, robotics, information systems, and artificial intelligence, share technological innovations, and discuss personnel training at the session ‘Everything for Nature: Artificial Intelligence and High Technologies’.
The discussion during the session ‘BRICS Sustainable Development: How Environmental Projects Change the World for the Better’ will center around multilateral and bilateral projects carried out within the BRICS environmental track. Interstate cooperation will also be on the agenda as the federal and regional authorities of Russia and the states surrounding the Caspian discuss the Caspian ecosystem, as well as during other events of the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress.
Topics on the agenda for the Meeting of the State Council Commission on Environmental Welfare will include the measures needed to achieve the national goal, the socio-economic development of the regions, and the implementation of the Federal Scientific and Technical Programme as it relates to environmental development among others.
The Congress interstate events will also include a discussion of the outlook for cooperation between Russia and Central Asia in water and energy, and representatives of the executive authorities and Russian and foreign protected areas will join UNESCO experts in a discussion of the management of transboundary World Heritage sites.
The highlight of the business programme of the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress will be the plenary session ‘Ecology of the New Reality: Challenges and Opportunities’, which will be moderated by the Speaker of the Federation Council and the Council of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States Valentina Matviyenko.
As in previous years, an eventful youth programme packed full of important environmental activities has been timed to coincide with the Nevsky Ecological Congress in St. Petersburg and will include SUP boarding in a large-scale open city festival bringing together Forum guests and eco-minded residents of St. Petersburg fond of the environmentally friendly water sport. The youth agenda consists of round tables on environmental education and culture, eco-volunteering, a meeting of climate initiative youth leaders from different countries, and an #ecoGTO environmental relay race among other events.
The 11th Nevsky Ecological Congress is organized by the Government of the Russian Federation, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, and the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States and managed by the Roscongress Foundation.
